Day 2: Red Rocks at dawn, Morrison for lunch, and a locally-sourced Boulder dinner

Red Rocks before the world shows up.

Red Rocks is one of those places that looks unreal in photos, and somehow feels even bigger in person. The trick is to arrive early, before the crowds and before the day starts moving too fast.

Things to do and see

Sunrise at the amphitheatre
On non-event days, Red Rocks opens one hour before sunrise and closes one hour after sunset. On event days, it’s typically open one hour before sunrise until around 2 p.m., so morning is the safest bet.

Trading Post and a short loop
Stop into the Trading Post for a quick souvenir or snack, then take one of the short trails that weave between rock formations for close up views and easy photo angles.

Morrison detour (small town reset)
After the stairs and sweeping views, Morrison is an easy shift in pace. Walk Bear Creek Avenue, grab a patio table, and let your legs recover.

Downtown Morrison

Optional nightcap back in Boulder
If you still have some energy after dinner, check what’s on at the Boulder Theater. It’s a historic downtown venue with a steady lineup of live music, film and comedy.

What to eat

Breakfast: Alpine Modern (quick/good coffee)
If you’re aiming for sunrise, keep breakfast simple. Alpine Modern is ideal for specialty coffee and something you can take to go.

Lunch: The Cow Eatery (Morrison)
A casual, local feeling lunch with a walk up window option. Perfect when you’re still in “outdoor clothes and sunglasses” mode.

Dinner: Blackbelly - Ingredient-Driven and Unapologetically Boulder

Known for locally focused cooking and a top-tier butcher counter, Blackbelly delivers a meal that feels unmistakably Boulder. With dinner service from 4 to 9 p.m. daily, it’s a perfect post-Red Rocks plan after Morrison. Book ahead if you can.
